A medium-sized catering company employing approximately 73 personnel introduced a new computerised attendance management system. An audit of the system revealed inconsistencies with two employees’ working hours and information was obtained that suggested both employees were booking in and out of work for each other when they were not on-premises. It was suspected that both employees were pretending to be working and getting paid when they were elsewhere.
The company director wanted to ensure that this was not common practice amongst her workforce and needed to identify how much the two employees had been paid for work they were not entitled to. Also, the company director wanted someone to conduct a fact-find investigation so that an informed decision could be made
concerning the continuing employment of the two employees. The company director contacted Carmichael Mediation Services (CMS) for a free consultation. Following that meeting CMS was commissioned to conduct a workplace investigation, that would enable the
company director to deal with the matter without leaving the company vulnerable to legal action.
